Balarama: The Teacher Who Refused the War

Who Balarama is

Balarama is transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s and so is Krishna’s elder brother, Shesha born as a man. He teaches the mace to Bhima and to Duryodhana. He will not choose between his pupils.

While Kurukshetra is fought he goes on pilgrimage. He returns for the last fight, sees the thigh broken, calls it crooked, and will not stay to bless it. The Yadava end later includes him: he sits down and the serpent leaves his mouth.

Names and spellings

Canonical name in this graph: Balarama. Common Mahabharat spellings and titles stay in the aliases rather than being repeated in every heading.

Narrative role

1. The teaching Both cousins learn the same weapon from the same man. That is why the eighteenth day is unwatchable for him.

2. The war He refuses the field. Krishna drives a chariot; Balarama walks a tirtha-route. The brothers split the Yadava answer to the Bharata war.

3. Day 18 He arrives in time to see Bhima strike below the navel. He lifts the plough, is talked down, and leaves.
