Who Devavrata is
Bhishma is Devavrata, eighth child of Ganga and Shantanu, the Vasu who had to live a full human life. He is the rightful prince who swears himself out of the succession so his father can marry Satyavati.
The vow is the bhishma: lifelong celibacy, spoken on the Yamuna in front of the assembled kings. He becomes preceptor and protector of a house that is no longer his to inherit. He falls on the tenth day because he will not shoot Shikhandi, who is Amba reborn.

Narrative role
Adi Parva — the river Ganga drowns seven sons. Shantanu stops her on the eighth. Years later she brings the boy back trained, and the king makes him heir.
The vow Satyavati’s father will not give her unless her son is king. Devavrata vows that, then vows celibacy when the fisherman still fears grandchildren. Flowers fall. The gods name him Bhishma. Shantanu grants that death will wait until he calls it.
Amba He takes the Kashi princesses for Vichitravirya. Amba asks to go to the man she had chosen. Neither that man nor Bhishma will have her. The refusal becomes a curse and, later, Shikhandi.
Bhishma Parva — day 10 He commands the first ten days. Krishna almost breaks his own promise and raises the chakra. Shikhandi stands in front; Arjuna shoots; the grandsire lies on a bed of arrows until Uttarayana.
How Devavrata is related
How is Devavrata related to Satyavati? The vow is for her marriage. Her line takes the throne because he stepped aside, not because he was weak. Satyavati

How is Devavrata related to Arjuna? Pupil and slayer. The Gita is spoken; then the tenth day uses Shikhandi as the screen through which Arjuna can hit him. Arjuna
How is Devavrata related to Dhritarashtra? Bhishma is the pillar beside a blind king. He teaches the princes and still cannot make the court take Vidura’s warnings. Dhritarashtra
