A path
Karna and Arjuna
They are half-brothers. Kunti is mother to both. Karna was born first, by Surya, and sent down the river. Arjuna was born later, by Indra, as Pandu’s recognized son. They meet as rivals, not as kin.
The shortest blood path is one woman. Kunti calls Surya while still unmarried and hides the child. Years later she calls Indra as Pandu’s queen. The same mouth names both sons, decades apart, and only one of those namings is public until the war’s eve.
The path a reader actually walks is not a genealogy chart. It is the tournament, where Karna matches Arjuna and is asked for a lineage; the sabha, where they stand on opposite sides of Draupadi; and the seventeenth day, when the wheel sticks.
Duryodhana’s gift of Anga sits between them as well. Karna can fight a prince only after he is made a king. That is not blood. It is the friendship that keeps the half-brothers from ever sitting as six.
