Who Vidura is
Vidura is the third son of the niyoga night: Ambika sent a maid in her ornaments, and Vyasa was pleased. He is Dharma, cursed by Mandavya to be born of a shudra womb, and so he can advise a Kuru court but not sit on its throne.
He reads faces. He speaks to Yudhishthira in riddles the others do not follow. He sends a miner to the lac house. He tells Dhritarashtra not to play. He is not followed. That unused seeing is his whole part.

Narrative role
Adi Parva — Jatugriha He knows what Varanavata is. The riddles and the tunnel are his. The Pandavas walk out; a Nishada family burns; the court performs the last honours anyway.
Sabha Parva He speaks against the dice and is overruled. He is the one man in the hall whose job was to stop it.
After He remains the minister of a house that has stopped listening. The recitation does not make him king as a reward. It keeps him standing where he was.
