The 18 Days of the Kurukshetra War

What happened on each of the eighteen days. Ten under Bhishma, five under Drona, two under Karna, the last under Shalya. Standalone pages exist only where the day can carry its own sitting.

  1. 1 The song before the first arrow

Yudhishthira walks across to ask permission of the elders. Arjuna drops the bow. Krishna holds the reins and speaks. The Gita is this morning. Then the first arrows go.

  2. 2 Arjuna meets the grandsire

Bhishma commands. Arjuna is forced into the grandsire’s path. The second day is the war remembering that one man taught the other to hold a bow.

  3. 3 The Kauravas press

Bhishma arranges the Kaurava push. The Pandavas hold. No named hinge yet — only the fact that the first commander is still unhurt.

  4. 4 Eight of the hundred fall

Bhima begins to spend the brothers. Eight of Dhritarashtra’s sons die this day in the common count. The hundred is no longer an abstraction.

  5. 5 Satyaki holds Drona

The Yadava pupil of Arjuna keeps Drona occupied. The houses are already mixed on the field: a Vrishni holding a Bharadvaja.

  6. 6 A melee without a name

The sixth day is remembered as a crush more than a duel. Commanders still stand. The recitation is saving its names.

  7. 7 The grandsire still unhurt

Bhishma has commanded a week. The Pandavas cannot find the angle. Krishna is already angry at the delay.

  8. 8 Iravan, and the rakshasa night

Arjuna’s naga son Iravan falls. At night the rakshasa measure of the war begins to show — Ghatotkacha’s kind of hour.

  9. 9 The chakra is raised

Krishna, who promised not to lift a weapon, raises the discus against Bhishma and is talked down. The ninth day is the almost-breaking of that promise.

  10. 10 Shikhandi, and the bed of arrows

Shikhandi stands in front. Bhishma will not shoot. Arjuna does. The grandsire falls on a bed of arrows and waits for the sun to turn north.

  11. 11 Drona takes the army

Bhishma is down. Drona takes command. The teacher of both sides now aims the Kaurava day. He wants Yudhishthira taken, not merely fought.

    Drona Yudhishthira

  12. 12 Bhagadatta and the elephant

Bhagadatta on Supratika presses Arjuna. The elephant is a war in itself. The old king of Pragjyotisha falls this day.

  13. 13 The boy inside the wheel

Drona forms the chakravyuha. Abhimanyu knows only the way in. Jayadratha holds the rim. Six warriors close. The boy dies in the middle.

  14. 14 Jayadratha before sunset

Arjuna vows that Jayadratha will not see another sunset. Krishna’s trick with the light is how the vow is kept. The night that follows spends Ghatotkacha.

  15. 15 The elephant named Ashwatthama

Bhima kills an elephant that shares a son’s name. Yudhishthira says Ashwatthama is dead, then the word elephant. Drona lays the bow down. Dhrishtadyumna takes the head.

  16. 16 Karna’s two days begin

Karna takes command. The armour is already gone. The Shakti is already spent. What remains is the rivalry and two days to finish it.

  17. 17 The wheel sticks

Karna’s chariot wheel sinks. He asks for dharma. Krishna names the sabha. Arjuna shoots. Kunti’s firstborn dies still arguing about the rules.

  18. 18 Shalya, the lake, the thigh

Shalya commands and falls to Yudhishthira. Duryodhana hides in a lake. Bhima breaks the thigh. At night Ashwatthama walks into the sleeping camp.
