Who Shakuni is
Shakuni is Subala’s son, Gandhari’s brother, the man whose dice the sabha uses. He is not a Kuru. He is the maternal uncle who makes a Kuru quarrel look like a legal game.
He plays Yudhishthira down through kingdom, brothers, self, and wife. He sends Uluka with insults before the war. Sahadeva kills him. The recitation does not give him a long death-speech. It gives him the hall.

Narrative role
Sabha Parva He invites the eldest Pandava to a game the eldest will not refuse. Each throw is his. Each stake is Yudhishthira’s.
Udyoga Uluka carries the taunts into the Pandava camp. The dice have become a war and he is still speaking in the tone of a hall.
The war Sahadeva, the youngest Pandava, is the one who kills him. The twins’ uncle on the other side, Shalya, dies another day.
