- Karna and ArjunaThey are half-brothers. Kunti is mother to both. Karna was born first, by Surya, and sent down the river. Arjuna was born later, by Indra, as Pandu’s recognized son. They meet as rivals, not as kin.
- Krishna and the PandavasKrishna is the Pandavas’ cousin. Kunti, their mother, is Vasudeva’s sister. He is also Subhadra’s brother — so Abhimanyu is his nephew — and Arjuna’s charioteer on the field.
- Bhishma and the KauravasBhishma is Devavrata, son of Shantanu and Ganga. Dhritarashtra is Vyasa’s son on Satyavati’s line — the line Bhishma stepped aside for. Duryodhana is therefore Bhishma’s grand-nephew, and also his pupil and his commander’s burden.
