Day 18: Shalya, the Lake, the Thigh

Shalya, uncle of the twins, last commander, falls to Yudhishthira. The Kaurava army is spent. Duryodhana hides in a lake. The Pandavas find him and call him out.

Bhima breaks the thigh. Balarama, who taught both men the mace, calls the blow crooked and will not stay. Draupadi’s vow from the sabha is collected in the dust.

Night is a different book. Ashwatthama, Kripa, and Kritavarma walk into the sleeping camp. Dhrishtadyumna and the Upapandavas die without armour on. The war’s last cruelty is not a day. It is the dark after the day.
